Support for Diversity

No aspect of the AIMS mission is more important than its effort to help member schools sustain diverse communities and cultures. By any measure, the commitment of AIMS schools to many kinds of diversity runs deep: For the 2018-19 academic year, people of color represented 32.3% of students, 16% of teachers, and 20.5% of administrators.

Schools are also committed to socio-economic diversity: 27% of students in AIMS schools are awarded financial assistance, totaling over $191,000,000. Diversity in AIMS schools includes a strong commitment to students with diverse learning styles and aptitudes.

The AIMS Diversity Statement articulates the association's official position and rationale for the vital importance of diversity in our schools.

For over twenty years, Making Schools Safe has attracted students, teachers, and administrators to hear speakers about LGBTQ issues, and to compare experiences at their schools. AIMS hosts an annual Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Conference in which faculty and administrators gathered to deepen their understanding of racial and ethnic matters. Students at AIMS schools (over 400 participated in 2018/19 program) have the opportunity to come together through the Baltimore Student Diversity Leadership Conference each fall to discuss issues and develop their leadership roles. The AIMS Job Fair supports schools in their efforts to attract and retain a diverse corps of teachers and administrators. And each year, AIMS includes speakers on diversity topics among its many professional development offerings.
