Building on concepts developed in Trusteeship 101, which focused on the Board’s fiduciary responsibilities, this interactive session will examine the critical importance of trustee strategic thinking and planning. Topics will include

• The strategic landscape for independent schools in Maryland & DC, with a particular focus on data and trends

• An examination of the ways independent schools should govern differently
to meet the challenges in an era of rapid change and complexity

• Case studies

Ron Goldblatt, Executive Director of AIMS, frequently speaks to Boards and Heads about strategic issues, trustee good practice, diversity, and other school-related topics. Ron is the author of Parents and Independent Schools and Diversity at Independent Schools, and he has (reluctantly) appeared on the Today Show to talk about the role of parents in schools. A 1975 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, Ron began his career in higher education and then was a litigator for seven years. His thirty-year career in independent schools has included time as a classroom teacher, Business Manager, Development Director, and the Head of two schools – a small boarding school for girls and a coed PK-12 day school in Annapolis. After sixteen years as the AIMS Executive Director, Ron will retire at the conclusion of the 2014-15 school year.
