The Board of an independent school is a unique entity: it consists of volunteers who have tremendous responsibility and impact, and yet are removed from the daily operations of the organization. Many people (even some Board members) are confused about the role of a Board and how it influences the health and stability of a school. Nonetheless, Boards are critical to the success of an independent school. Clarity about Board member roles and responsibility is crucial. Encouraging individuals with an understanding of the importance of Board service to join Boards will enable Boards to be more effective in their work. Furthermore, Heads of Schools are often called upon to support Board members in understanding their roles and therefore aspiring Heads need to have a deep understanding of the relationship between governance and school operations.

Anyone thinking about becoming either a Board member or the Head of an independent school should have (at least) a basic understanding of leading practices in governance. While there are many resources available that outline Board member responsibilities, the practices of good governance are often less clear. This workshop will outline the basic structure and function of an independent school Board and the primary Board member duties and responsibilities. We will discuss why aspiring leaders should serve on a Board, how to find a Board on which to serve, and what questions to ask when discerning if Board service is right for you. Participants will leave with a basic understanding of governance in an independent school as well as steps for becoming an effective Board member.
