Intended to engage Heads of School and newer CFOs and/or Directors of Finance, and Board Treasurers (or similar) that have direct or indirect oversight of intermediate and long term reserve, endowment and foundation funds. 

 

Attendees should expect to learn or reinforce the foundations of investing including:

  • the role of an endowment (and other reserve funds) within the larger financial structure and governance of an independent school
  • understanding the role of stocks, bonds, cash and alternative strategies and when each is appropriate
  • defining introductory concepts such as asset allocation, risk and reward expectations, required minimum distribution, spending plans
  • your fiduciary responsibility and,
  • how to discuss investments with the Board, Staff and other constituencies.

Presenters: 

FREDRIC T. WALLS, II is a Managing Director with J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Washington, D.C.. He provides individuals, families, associations, endowments and foundations with comprehensive wealth management strategies, ongoing guidance, and customized plans to address their financial needs.
Before joining J.P. Morgan, Mr. Walls served as Managing Director with Institutional Investment Solutions at SunTrust Bank. In this role he was responsible for investing endowment and reserve funds for mission-driven organizations, locally, nationally and internationally.

 

Prior to this role, Mr. Walls served as Greater Washington, DC Market Director with PNC Asset Management. There he led a team responsible for all functions related to the investment oversight and management of a $2 billion book of client assets. Previously, Mr. Walls held finance, management and investment positions with Prudential Financial and Smith Barney.

 

Mr. Walls received his M.B.A. in Finance from The Wharton School, and his B.S. in Mathematics from Howard University. He also holds leadership positions with several organizations, including the Sibley Memorial Hospital Foundation Investment Committee, the American Bankers Association Trust School Board, and the Alice Ferguson Foundation, for which he serves as Chair. He has previously held Board roles with National Park Trust, the DC Police Foundation, the Levine School and Imagination Stage Inc.
 

 

MICHAEL GARVEY is an Executive Director with the J.P. Morgan Endowments & Foundations Group. In this role, he works with not-for-profit organizations and large family trusts to develop institutional investment strategies, build customized separately managed portfolios and invest across long-only and alternative investments for some of the most sophisticated investors around the world.

 

Prior to joining J.P. Morgan, Michael worked in the mortgage portfolio group at Fannie Mae, providing best execution analysis, hedging strategies and daily market commentary to mortgage originators across the country.

 

Michael earned an M.B.A. from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and a B.A. from Villanova University. He is a CFA charterholder®, a CFP ® professional, and holds the FINRA Series 7, 63 and 65 securities licenses.
