With the recent release of immersive virtual reality head mounted displays like the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Google Cardboard, we are witnessing a surge of both popularity and interest in virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) applications. The independent school community is well positioned as a leader in applying emerging technologies to improve learning outcomes.
In this session we will explore how institutions are already using VR and AR platforms, and how these new applications are poised to decrease the cost of education while increasing our effectiveness in accomplishing our academic missions.

Learn about
  • virtual and augmented reality platforms that are currently available
  • upcoming platforms on the horizon
  • virtual and augmented reality applications, from virtual field trips to new pedagogy.

If you haven’t yet dabbled in AR or VR and don’t get the appeal, imagine studying environments on planets in outer space and taking the whole class to ancient Egypt with just a smartphone and an inexpensive headset. The benefits include increased engagement, shared experience among students and greater comprehension.
Schools can take advantage of many of the VR apps using individual laptops, iPads or electronic whiteboards already in the classroom. While VR is changing quickly, we will discuss the pros and cons of the various options currently available.
Following the VR/AR 101 presentation,
  • we will visit the demonstration area where various VR/AR vendors will have their systems/applications on display where you can try out the gear yourself
  • we will show students how to build their own Virtual Reality applications using VR engines that are available online for free.
