What is one of the most pressing issues facing independent schools in 2017-2018? According to the National Association of Independent Schools, it's sexual assault policies and practices. Most schools have a policy in place, but some don't and some may not know their rights or responsibilities. AIMS and the Sexuality Education Steering Team have put together a thorough, comprehensive and engaging look at this topic through the lens of the many different stakeholders. We'll open the day with a keynote from attorneys Ms. 
Leslie Gomez and Gina Maisto Smith, with Cozen O'Connor Law Firm, out of Philadelphia. Gomez and Maisto Smith have conducted high profile sexual misconduct investigations and reports for Baylor University, Emma Willard School, The Philadelphia Archdiocese as well as the infamous UVA case described in Rolling Stone magazine. They are both nationally recognized experts on institutional response to sexual and gender-based harassment and violence, child abuse, and other forms of harassment, discrimination, and criminal conduct.


After we have a framework in place for the importance and imminent nature of the topic, we will then offer three different breakout sessions, with three different topic choices each block--that's 9 breakouts! We are proud to announce that we will have breakouts with speakers as well-known as Justine Fonte on Pornography Literacy, Chelsea Wiggins and Beth Wynkoop from the Maryland Coalition against Sexual Assault on Title IX Requirements and Best Practices for Independent SchoolsDan Buccino from Hopkins on ethics and disclosureDebbie Roffman on Developing A Comprehensive Sexual Education Program K-12, speakers from Planned Parenthood, local law enforcement and so much more. We'll close out the day with another keynote from well-known Sexuality Educator, Al Vernacchio, on Creating A Culture of Consent.

Breakout Descriptions:

Session One:
Porn Literacy: Promoting Pleasure through a Feminist Lens (LS, MS, US)
Speaker: Justine Fonte
Topics on body image, protection, consent, pleasure, emotional intelligence, and gender dynamics are marginalized in fear-based sex education practice. So how do we promote sex-positivity when pornography becomes the default sex ed for adolescents? This session will unpack pornography and intellectualize its criticisms through a feminist lens.

Students and Their Impact (LS, MS,US)
Speakers: Students at Friends School of Baltimore and The Park School of Baltimore
Students and their impact: How local upper school students successfully launched a campaign to dismantle rape culture in their school and community, and how another middle school group successfully paved the way for peer learning on consent in lower school. Hear from students at Friends School of Baltimore and the Park School.

Peer Educators: Planned Parenthood (MS,US)
Speakers: Planned Parenthood
Learn how your students can become trained peer educators to lead programs and answer questions about teen health, sexuality, decision making, contraception, abstinence, and HIV/AIDS in school. Also, learn how to connect with Planned Parenthood educators who can provide human sexuality education in your schools!

Session Two:
Title IX and Independent Schools: What You Need to Know and How to Care for Student Survivors (LS, MS, US)
Speakers: Chelsea Wiggins and Beth Wynkoop from the Maryland Coalition against Sexual Assault
Title IX Best Practices; Trauma Informed Care - it’s good for your whole school community.

Understanding the Criminal Justice Response: What to Expect When the Police Are Involved  (MS, US)
Speakers: Gail Reid, MSW, LCSW-C, Director of Advocacy/Emergency Services, TurnAround, Inc.and Det. Jessica Armstrong-Reichenberg, Sexual Assault Training Coordinator/former Sex Offense Detective for the Baltimore Police Dept.
Understanding the criminal justice response: What to expect when the police are involved.
Students who have been assaulted have the right to access the criminal justice system. Students and schools should be informed about what to expect concerning a criminal investigation and what assistance and support is available to students. This session will address how schools and police can work together to minimize re-traumatization and protect the safety and privacy of students.

Ethics in Reporting: Counselor/MD Law Disclosure (LS, MS, US)
Speaker: Dan Buccino, Johns Hopkins University
Counselors! How do you balance the need to protect the confidentiality of survivors, help facilitate their care and healing, and partner with administration and parents effectively? Learn the law in Maryland, discuss ethical mandates and your role as counselor.

Session Three:
Policies for Independent Schools Work Group (LS, MS, US)
Facilitators: Jean Brune, Head of School Emeritus (Roland Park Country School) and Matthew Micciche, Head of School (Friends School of Baltimore)    
Developing comprehensive sexual violence response plans and policies is good business, and parent and student friendly, too. Two school Heads will bring their schools' policies, and attendees of this breakout will be asked to bring theirs. We'll compare notes on our policies and examine why some statements are broadly included and why some are only included in a few. We'll discuss the merits and drawbacks of various policy statements. This is a discussion breakout.

Breakout Work Group: Creating Common Language (LS, MS, US)

Facilitator: Robbye Fox, Certified Parent (PEP) Educator
An important aspect of generating an appropriate and effective response to any event is developing the language your school will use when communicating to the various constituencies.  It can be difficult to know which words will convey meaning without creating unintentional confusion. In this work group, we will endeavor, led by a parenting expert versed in independent school norms, to create some "forms" or templates" with some phrases or passages that could be used to communicate with parents when the need arises to: explain the philosophy of a sexual education curriculum, explain the implementation of that curriculum, explain the circumstances of an event to describe a new/existing policy surrounding sexual education/misconduct. Attendees will leave with access to our collectively created "lexicon."

What is Truly Comprehensive Human Sexuality Education? (LS, MS, US)
Facilitator: Debbie Roffman
Sexual assault is not only a terrible problem in our society, it's also symptomatic of the absence of comprehensive PreK-12 sexuality education in our schools. This session will address the misplaced anxieties and pedagogical double standards that keep independent schools from providing the kind of quality education our students deserve, and will identify the characteristics of programs that truly meet developmentally-based needs.
