Middle school is a time when students are inherently working to develop a healthy sense of self, resiliency skills, an understanding of their relationship with others, and a sense of place within the community. The challenge for middle school educators is how we support these developmental lines in the limited time often allotted to an advisory program. In this workshop, presenters will share the process they undertook to develop a two year sequence of 7/8 advisory lessons that capture all these themes in an integrated, coherent, and compelling way. Applicable Grades: 7-8.
Presenters: Dr. Michelle Pokorny-Parker, Seneca Academy; Nan Pickens, Sidwell Friends School
Michelle Parker is a clinical psychologist, middle school counselor, and previously the all-school counseling coordinator at the Sidwell Friends School. Michelle is now the Head of School at Seneca Academy. Earlier in her career, she taught upper school science. Nan Pickens is a middle school Spanish teacher and 7/8 advisor. Both are active in Equity, Justice, and Community work at the school. Together they serve on a committee that created and oversees the 7/8 advisory curriculum.
