On this day, Lower School Teachers will select from among three different concurrent roundtable sessions. Host for these Gatherings will be Cathy North, Lower School Head, Severn School. Lunch is included.

1. Early Learning Makerspaces

Embracing the Maker Movement in the Early Childhood Classroom

Regardless of what is being created, “Makers” show a spirit of curiosity, embrace trial and error and collaboration to further an idea, to invent something to solve a problem, and/or add value to what currently exists. In this session, we will discuss the philosophy of being a maker, the design process, and how it aligns with developmentally appropriate practice. We will give examples of maker inspired projects, so come prepared to share ideas and collaborate with fellow early childhood colleagues. Applicable Grades: PS-K. This discussion will be facilitated by PK Teachers, Chrisie Saunders and Crystal Erksine, Severn School.

2. Lower School Math

Flex those Math Muscles with Warm-Up Routines, Grades 2-5

In this session, participants will learn the importance of implementing warm-up routines to help students review, practice and extend math skills. Participants will leave with many new, fresh ideas that will get kids excited about math. Teachers should come prepared to share some of their favorite math warm-ups with the group. Applicable Grades: K-5. This discussion will be facilitated by Math Specialist, Stacy Shaener, Severn School.

3. Lower School Social Studies

Social Studies

Connect with other social studies teachers during a lively session on how to rework and rejoice in new curriculum opportunities! How can we continue to teach firmly established, beloved content while, at the same time, opening ourselves up to evolving thought and broader global perspectives? Bring your questions and ideas; the program is flexible depending on the interest of the attendees. Applicable Grades: 2-5. This discussion will be facilitated by Fourth Grade Teacher, Karen Bennett, Severn School.
