Administration of Medication (AOM) is a District of Columbia Department of Health approved program to provide training to non-medical school staff to enable them to administer medication to students. The course consists of training incorporating video, lecture, at-home assignments, hands-on practice, quizzes, practicum, and a final exam. Personnel in attendance will receive training including, but not limited to, in-depth knowledge of medication basics, safety practices, proper and appropriate technique in administering medications via various routes, documentation content and procedures, and recognition and response to common medical conditions. This training is valid for 3 years upon satisfactory completion of all course requirements.

Schools are encouraged to enroll personnel who will be managing student health conditions on a regular basis.

PLEASE NOTE: Successful completion of this course enables the participant to dispense medication according to a medication action plan and under the direction of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician, or a physician’s assistant who has entered into a collaborative relationship with a physician. The participant’s Head of School must sign a form acknowledging that the participant will administer medication under the supervision of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician, or a physician’s assistant who has entered into a collaborative relationship with a physician in order for the participant to receive their certificate of completion.
