Building on concepts developed in Trusteeship 101, which focused on the Board’s fiduciary responsibilities, this interactive session will examine the importance of strategic and generative thinking. Topics will include

• The strategic landscape for independent schools in Maryland & DC
• Strategies to help Boards design meetings that move beyond fiduciary topics to include time for deeper thinking
• Case studies

Co-presenters are Mary DeKuyper and Ron Goldblatt.

Mary DeKuyper has worked with more than sixty independent schools and the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. The author of the NAIS Trustee Handbook published by the National Association of Independent Schools in 1998, 2003 and 2007, Mary is the former Board chair of The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore and was National Chair of Volunteers of the American Red Cross. She currently serves on the Board of Enoch Pratt Free Library. This interactive workshop for new and nearly-new trustees will shed light on the critical topics faced by today's Trustees, including their roles and responsibilities and the Board’s relationship to the Head of School.

Ron Goldblatt, Executive Director of AIMS, frequently speaks to Boards and Heads about strategic issues, trustee good practice, diversity, and other school-related topics. Ron is the author of Parents and Independent Schools and Diversity at Independent Schools, and he has (reluctantly) appeared on the Today Show to talk about the role of parents in schools. A 1975 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, Ron began his career in higher education and then was a litigator for seven years. His thirty year career in independent schools has included time as a classroom teacher, Business Manager, Development Director, and the Head of two schools – a small boarding school for girls and a coed PK-12 day school in Annapolis. Ron served on the Board of AIMS and was its President for two years.
