This series of professional development workshops, to be held during the 2013 - 14 school year, is designed to immerse teachers in the historic records of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to promote project-based teaching and learning and strengthen public understanding of Congress as an institution. The workshops will emphasize inductive and interactive learning. In each session, teachers will collaborate in hands-on learning activities using educational resources from the Center for Legislative Archives. Each workshop will also include discussions about best practices in teaching with primary sources as well as insights from staff of the Center and the National Archives, as well as from the staff of partner institutions and from other professionals associated with representative government. The interactive design of each session is intended to provide an opportunity for the participants to build professional links and to discuss how best to match the materials being presented to the needs of the students each of them teaches. Several sessions will take teachers behind the scenes at the National Archives to study original historic records. To the extent possible, the workshops will also draw upon the educational resources of the U.S. Capitol.

The House of Representatives and the Senate make up the representative branch of the federal government, and their records open many windows onto American history and life that show how Congress has reflected and shaped the nation. The participating teachers will have an opportunity to analyze this history and discover new ways to teach students about the role of Congress in history, how it functions today, and its importance to the future.

Teachers enrolled in the series will be paired with public school teachers, with whom they will work as partners for the duration of the program. This private/public partnership reflects the mission of the Archives and will broaden and deepen the experience for all participants.

Each team of participating teachers will be required to create an educational resource on a topic related to representative government or Congress’s role in history that uses primary sources from the Center for Legislative Archives. Each lesson will be due prior to the last session at which each team will present their work to their colleagues. It is expected that each lesson will have been used in the classroom prior to the presentation and that it will be available for publication on the Center’s website after the presentation.
